CHRIST
The Bible Teaches That… 1. CHRIST IS GOD'S SON. In this lesson we will learn many wonderful things. It is grand to know that one such as Jesus was willing to leave heaven and come to provide salvation for us.
The first thing we want to note in this lesson is that Christ is God's son. In John 6:67, Jesus had just asked His disciples if they were going to leave Him as some had done. Peter said: "Lord, to whom shall we go? Thou hast the words of eternal life. And we believe and are sure that thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God" (John 6:68-69).
When Jesus came to the disciples on the coasts of Caesarea and Philippi, the record which is written in Matthew 16:13-20, He asked them whom they said He was. Peter answered: "Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God."
When Jesus was baptized (Matthew 3:13-17), He came up out of the water and a voice from heaven said: "This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased." Here God recognized Christ publicly as His Son and stated that He was pleased with Him.
On the mount when Jesus was transfigured before Peter, James and John, the voice broke the silence from heaven once again, and said: "This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased, hear ye Him" (Matthew 17:5). In this example we see that Jesus was not only the Son of God, but He was also the person we should heed.
The Bible Teaches That… 2. GOD LOVED THE WORLD AND SENT HIS SON TO SAVE US. One of the greatest, no doubt, the very greatest love story of the Bible, is the story of how God made it possible for us to be saved. In John 3:16, we read: "For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life." This is called by some, the golden text of the Bible. It is a golden statement, so to speak, for it shows us that God loved us so much that He was willing to send His own Son that we might be saved and not be lost in hell.
The Bible Teaches That … 3. JESUS WAS IN THE BEGINNING WITH GOD. This is pointed out in John 1:1-14, we read: "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God." This verse teaches that the Word was with God. Verse 14 states: "And the Word was made flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth." Hence, we see that the Word was in the beginning with God, was God and then became flesh and dwelt among us. We know that this is speaking of Jesus and we see that He was in the beginning with God, His Father.
The Bible Teaches That … 4. JESUS HAS BEEN GIVEN ALL POWER IN HEAVEN AND EARTH. One of the important events which took place after the resurrection of Jesus was His appearance to His disciples and the giving of what is commonly know as the Great Commission. This is mentioned in Matthew 28:18-20. There the Bible teaches that Jesus said to them: "All power is given to Me in heaven and earth, go ye therefore and teach all nations, baptizing them into the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost, teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you. Lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world." Since Jesus has been given this power, we certainly should remember that we must study the Bible, find out what Jesus has told us to do, and do it with all our might.
The Bible Teaches That … 5. JESUS IS THE SAVIOUR OF THE WORLD. An angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph (Mary's husband) and said to him regarding Mary: "And she shall bring forth a Son, and thou shall call His name Jesus: for He shall save His people from their sins" (Matthew 1:21).
John the Baptist called Jesus: "the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world" (John 1:29).
The Bible Teaches That … 6. JESUS DIED, WAS BURIED, AND ROSE AGAIN THE THIRD DAY. The salvation of all sinners is dependent upon the death, burial, and resurrection of Christ. Through the death, burial and resurrection of Christ redemption has been brought to the world.
It was the will of God which sent Christ to earth. Jesus said that He came to do the Father's will and not His own. Without any murmuring or complaining, Jesus humbled Himself into obedience to His Father and to the death on the cross, that salvation might be provided for you and me.
God's plan was for Jesus to die, be buried, and be raised again. This plan was carried out in exactness, and after much abuse Jesus was crucified and buried in a borrowed tomb. On the third day He came forth and wrote an eternal "yes" to the age-old question asked by Job: "If a man dies will he live again?" We rejoice today because Jesus lives and has provided a way by which we might be saved from sin.
The Bible Teaches That … 7. BY JESUS' DEATH, BURIAL AND RESURRECTION WE CAN BE SAVED. The apostle Paul, writing to the church at Rome, (Romans 6:3-5) points out that we must obey the form of the death, burial and resurrection of Christ to walk in newness of life. Verse 17 teaches that the Romans had obeyed the form of doctrine. Verses 3-5 teach: "Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Christ were baptized into His death? Therefore, we are buried with Him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. For if we have been planted together in the likeness of His death, we shall be also in the likeness of His resurrection."
CONCLUSION: We can conclude from this lesson that Jesus is the Son of the living God; that God loved us so much that He sent Christ to bring salvation; that Jesus came, suffered and died and rose again, and was given authority from God to give us the plan of salvation. If we are willing to believe in Him, repent of our sins, be buried with Him in baptism, we will have remission of sins and be able to walk in newness of life. Study the Bible, know who Christ is and what He has done, and will do for you. Then be obedient to His voice and all will be well with your soul.
