GOD
The Bible Teaches That… 1. GOD IS SPIRIT. In John 4:24, we read, "God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth."
The Bible Teaches That… 2. GOD IS ETERNAL. In Psalm 90:1-2, we read the forceful words: "Lord, You have been our dwelling place in all generations. Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever You had formed the earth and the world, even from everlasting to everlasting, You are God". In Deuteronomy 32:40, we read: "For I lift up my hand to heaven, and say, As I live forever." In the same book, chapter 33 and verse 27, we quote: "The eternal God is your refuge, and underneath are the everlasting arms: He will thrust out the enemy from before you; and will say, destroy!"
The Bible Teaches That… 3. GOD IS OMNIPRESENT. This means that God is everywhere - something which the world is very much unconcerned. David writes in Psalm 139:7-8: "Where can I go from Your spirit? Or where can I flee from Your presence? If I ascent up into heaven, You are there: If I make my bed in hell, behold, You are there." Jeremiah 23:24, tells us: "Can any hide himself in secret places, So I shall not see him? says the Lord: Do I not fill heaven and earth? says the Lord." In the wisdom of Solomon, the Bible teaches that: "The eyes of the Lord are in every place, keeping watch on the evil and the good." (Proverbs 15:3). In the New Testament, the apostle Paul, preaching on Mars Hill, said that God is not far from any of us. (Acts 17:27).
The Bible Teaches That… 4. GOD IS OMNISCIENT. The term omniscient means that God knows everything. No man can make this claim. In fact, it is man who denies there is a God. In Romans 1:19-23, the apostle Paul said: "because what may be known of God is manifested in them, for God has shown it to them. For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even His eternal power and Godhead, so that they are without excuse, because, although they knew God, they did not glorify Him as God, nor were thankful, but became futile in their thoughts, and their foolish hearts were darkened. Professing to be wise, they became fools, and changed the glory of the incorruptible God into an image made like corruptible man – and birds and four-footed beasts and creeping things.” God knows everything. This should cause us to bow our heads in reference and humility and deep respect for a being so great. David said in Psalm 139:3, "You comprehend my path and my lying down, and are acquainted with all my ways." Job tells us that: "Sheol (Hell) is naked before him, and destruction hath no covering." (Job 26:6). Job again says: "Does He not see my ways and count all my steps?" (Job 31:4) The Psalmist tells us: "Great is our Lord, and mighty in power; His understanding is infinite." (Psalms 147:5). Not only does the Old Testament bear out the wisdom of God; but so does the New. Hebrews 4:13 says "And there is no creature hidden from His sight, but all things are naked and open the eyes of Him to whom we must give account." Let us always remember that God knows everything. Isaiah tells us that as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are God's thoughts than our thoughts and God's ways than our ways (Isaiah 55:8-9).
The Bible Teaches That… 5. GOD IS OMNIPOTENT. This term indicates that God is all-powerful. God created all things (Colossians 1:16). Certainly if he was able to create all things, then he is also able to control them. In Psalm 93:4, we read: "The Lord on high is mightier than the noise of many waters, than the mighty waves of the sea." We read in Nahum 1:3 - "The Lord is slow to anger, and great in power, and will not at all acquit the wicked. The Lord hath His way in the whirlwind and in the storm, and the clouds are the dust of His feet." Examples of God's power are shown throughout the entire Bible from causing water to stand aside and letting the Israelites pass through the Red Sea, to raining fire from heaven on wicked cities and to raising the dead.
The Bible Teaches That… 6. GOD CREATED ALL THINGS. Genesis 1:1 states that "In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth." Beginning with the first verse of the Bible, we have the story told of the creation of all things. In the verse which follows, is a list of the things created. First Day - Light. (verse 3) Second Day - Firmament. (verse 7) Third Day - Dry land and water, grass, herb yielding seed, and fruit trees. (verses 9-12) Fourth Day - Sun, moon, and stars. (verses 14-18) Fifth Day - Fish of the sea, fowl of the air. (verses 20-27) Sixth Day - Cattle, everything that creep upon the earth; and man. (verses 24 –30) Thus we have the story of how all things were created. God in all His power and wisdom has created all things and set in motion certain laws that sustain them. Next we want to notice that:
The Bible Teaches That… 7. GOD SUSTAINS ALL THINGS. In Hebrews 1:3, we are told that God made the world by His son, and upholds all things by the word of His power. In Acts 17:28, Paul the apostle, speaking on Mars Hill said: "for in Him, we live and move and have our being..." So we see that it is by the goodness of God that we exist and are sustained. If God would withhold His blessings from us even for a moment we would perish, for He has given unto us all, life and breath and all things.
The Bible Teaches That… 8. GOD HAS PROVIDED SALVATION. One of the central themes of the Bible is salvation. We should be made happy to know that God has provided us with salvation. That which is called by some, the golden text of the Bible, is found in John 3:16: "For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life." 2 Peter 3:9, teaches: "The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some count slackness, but is longsuffering toward us: not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance." In Romans 1:16, Paul wrote: "For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, for it is the power of God to salvation to everyone who believes, for the Jew first and also for the Greek."
The Bible Teaches That… 9. GOD LOVES ALL OF US. God not only allows us to be saved but He also wants us to be saved. Some people feel that they have sinned so much that they can never come back to God. The Bible says, however that "But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us" (Romans 5:8). Even the people on the day of Pentecost who had helped to murder God's own Son were acceptable to Him when they obeyed the gospel (Acts 2:36-47). Jesus said: "Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you, and learn from Me: for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light" (Matthew 11:28-30).
CONCLUSION: We should exalt God above all else. He who has vision, power and wisdom, is our Creator and Sustainer. He is the one who provides us with all material blessings and who will give us all spiritual blessings in Christ Jesus (Ephesians 1:3). If you are not in Christ, then you should be studying the Bible and learning what you need to do to get into Christ, that you might have the salvation that God has provided. May God bless you in studying His word and in coming to a knowledge of the truth.
