SIN
LESSON TWO
The hiss of the serpent is in the word 'sin'. From the time that Satan beguiled Eve in the beginning to this day, the word 'sin' and the subject of sin has been the device of Satan to deceive men and to cause them to lose their souls.
Probably the reason that there is so much sin, is that we do not recognize sin as readily as we ought to and we do not realize the enormity of its destructive force. We ourselves should be learning to recognize sin and to know its consequences.
The Bible Teaches That - 1. THE WAGES OF SIN IS DEATH. Sin does have wages, yet we do not want the kind of wages that comes from sin. No one wants death, yet the wages of sin is death. On the other hand, the gift of God is eternal life (Romans 6:23).
If we would inherit eternal life, we must keep the commandments of God faithfully unto death.
The Bible Teaches That - 2. SIN IS THE TRANSGRESSION OF THE LAW OR LAWLESSNESS. 1 John 3:4: "Whoever commits sin also commits lawlessness, and sin is lawlessness." God has given certain laws to be obeyed; when we fail to obey these laws we have transgressed and therefore we have sinned.
The Bible Teaches That - 3. ALL UNRIGHTEOUSNESS OR WRONGDOING IS SIN. In 1 John 5:17 we read: "All unrighteousness is sin, and there is sin not leading to death." To be righteous is to do right. If we do not do right we are unrighteous. John tells us that all unrighteousness is sin.
The Bible Teaches That - 4. WHEN WE KNOW TO DO GOOD AND DO NOT DO IT, WE HAVE SINNED. "Therefore to him who knows to do good, and does not do it, to him it is sin" James 4:17. There are at least two kinds of sin: sins of commission and sins of omission.
SINS OF COMMISSION are : Things we do that we ought not to do.
SINS OF OMISSION are : Things that we ought to do that we fail to do.
If we know of good deeds to do and we are able to do them, we are sinning when we fail to do them. Many will be lost because they were able to do things that were good but simply did not do them.
The Bible Teaches That - 5. WHATSOEVER IS NOT OF FAITH IS SIN. Paul wrote to the church at Rome and said: "Whatever is not from faith is sin" Romans 14:23. Here, Paul taught that we must be fully persuaded that what we are doing is right or else we are sinning by engaging in it. This does not mean that conscience is a safe guide, but we must do what we do in faith that it is pleasing God. Faith cometh by hearing and hearing by the Word of God.
The Bible Teaches That - 6. BY ONE MAN SIN ENTERED INTO THE WORLD. Paul wrote "Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned" Romans 5:12. Many wonder where sin came from. Sin came into the world as a result of the transgression of Adam and Eve in the garden. God had given them commandments to be obeyed, but they disobeyed or transgressed God's law and therefore sin came into the world for sin is the transgression of the law.
Sin entered the world through Adam and Eve. Because of the sin of Adam and Eve, we today are brought under bondage of sin. Paul said: "for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God" (Romans 3:23). Since all have sinned, we then want to know how we have the sins forgiven. We will study some of this in this lesson and then finish the study of FORGIVENESS in the next lesson.
The Bible Teaches That - 7. JESUS OUR SAVIOUR MADE IT POSSIBLE FOR SINS TO BE FORGIVEN. At the last supper with the disciples. Matthew 26:28, Jesus said: "For this is My blood of the new testament, which is shed for many for remission of sins." Thus Jesus taught that His blood was to be shed for remission of sins.
Acts 20:28, Paul said: "Therefore take heed to yourselves and to the flock, among which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to shepherd the church of God, which He had purchased with His own blood"
Jesus by His death, purchased the church, and made it possible that through Him we might be saved. John the Baptist said: "Behold the Lamb of God that takes away the sin of the world!" John 1:29. This he said about Jesus when he saw Him coming towards him on a certain day.
The Bible Teaches That - 8. IN ORDER TO HAVE OUR SINS FORGIVEN WE MUST OBEY THE COMMANDS OF THE GOSPEL. Peter said at Pentecost, Acts 2:38: "Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit, for the promise is to you and to your children, and to all who are afar off, as many as the Lord God will call." Saul of Tarsus was told: "And now why are you waiting? Arise and be baptised, and wash away your sins, calling on the name of the Lord" Acts 22:16.
CONCLUSION: We see that though Satan has worked to bring sin into the world, and that we must suffer many troubles and even death, yet we may overcome the power of sin and have forgiveness of the sins which we have committed. Be on constant lookout for sin at every hand. The Bible teaches that Satan goes about "as a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour" 1 Peter 5:8. He will try to devour you. Don't let him do it. Recognize sin, learn to hate it vehemently, and fight it with all the power of your being. This victory will give you the gift of God which is eternal life, when this life is over.
