JUDGEMENT The Bible Teaches That… 1. AFTER DEATH THERE WILL BE A JUDGEMENT (Hebrews 9:27).
In the above-mentioned passage of Scripture we are told that it is appointed unto men once to die and after this the judgement. In this passage we have the implication that death does not end everything for us, but rather there will be a judgement even after death.
The Bible Teaches That… 2. EVERYONE SHALL COME FORTH FROM THE GRAVE.
In John 5:28, we read: "Marvel not at this: for the hour is coming, in the which all that are in their graves shall hear His voice; And shall come forth; they that have done good unto the resurrection of life; and they that have done evil, unto the resurrection of damnation." Here Jesus emphatically declares that all shall be judged and the evil condemned while the righteous are rewarded.
The Bible Teaches That… 3. PUNISHMENT WILL BE BROUGHT UPON THOSE WHO DO NOT OBEY THE GOSPEL.
In 2 Thessalonians 1:7-9 we read: "And to you who are troubled rest with us, when the Lord Jesus shall be revealed from heaven with His mighty angels. In flaming fire taking vengeance on them that know not God and that obeys not the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ. Who shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of His power."
We certainly should concern ourselves with learning the gospel and then by being obedient to it lest when the Lord comes we have failed to obey the gospel and be punished with an everlasting punishment.
The Bible Teaches That… 4. EVERY MAN WILL BE JUDGED ACCORDING TO HIS WORKS.
In Revelation 20:12-15 we read: "And I saw the dead small and great stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened which is the book of life; and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works. And the sea gave up the dead which were in it; and death and hell delivered up the dead which were in them; and they were judged every man according to their works. And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death. And whosoever was not found in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire."
This passage teaches that God keeps record of what we do and that some day we shall stand to be judged and we will be judged according to our works and rewarded or punished according to the deeds which we have done. The Bible Teaches That… 5. EVERY DEED WILL BE BROUGHT BEFORE THE JUDGEMENT.
In the Old Testament we read in Ecclesiastes 12:13-14: "Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter; Fear God, and keep His commandments: for this is the whole duty of man. For God shall bring every work into judgement, with every secret thing, whether it be good, or whether it be evil.”
This ought to cause everyone to realize that nothing which they do is a secret unto God, and also that some day every deed, which they have done or will do, shall be brought before God and He shall give an account of it. This behooves us to certainly walk carefully day by day.
The Bible Teaches That… 6. EVEN THE RIGHTEOUS SHALL SCARCELY BE SAVED.
One of the frightening passages of Scripture in the Bible is found in 1 Peter 4:17-18: "For the time is come that judgement must begin at the house of God: and if it first begin at us, what shall the end be of them that obey not the gospel of God? And if the righteous scarcely be saved, where shall the ungodly and the sinner appear?"
Sinner, heed this admonition. If you have not obeyed the gospel of Christ, for your soul's welfare, do so now lest you be found in judgement with the ungodly and sinners.
Christian, heed this admonition also; remember, you are not exempt from the judgement. You also shall be judged, and if righteous yet only scarcely be saved. Will you not try to live more closely unto God that you might receive the eternal reward of the faithful.
The Bible Teaches That… 7. WE SHALL HAVE A RIGHTEOUS JUDGEMENT.
When Paul wrote to Timothy just before his death he said: "I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith: Henceforth, there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love His appearing" (2 Timothy 4:7-8).
In this passage of Scripture we learn three things. One - is that we shall have a righteous judgement. Another is that Jesus will be the judge, and the third is that all who love the appearing of the Lord shall receive a crown of righteousness at that time.
CONCLUSION: We have learned in this lesson that there will be a final judgement of all people. Since there will be a final judgement of all, you and I will be there. We will be judged according to our works and either rewarded or condemned. Every deed, which we have done, will be brought before the Lord and we shall be judged by them and by the things written in the book.
We have learned that those who have not obeyed the gospel and know not God will be punished with everlasting punishment and this means that if we have not obeyed the gospel we certainly will be doing so immediately that we might be sure of a home in heaven.
We also learned that even those who are righteous shall scarcely be saved and so this means that we must be careful to live close to God. Another thing, which we learned, is that there is a reward for all who live for and love the appearing of the Lord. Let us study, live, work and pray that we shall receive the crown of life of the righteous.
